Keeping Your Car Safe In The Winter

Blog

If you do a lot of heavy driving during the winter, then it's important to take steps to keep your car (and the person behind the wheel) safe in bad weather. Here are some tips that you can work on before winter.

Get the Car Tuned Up

The first thing to do is take the car to an auto repair center to see what they have to say about its condition. They will look for a few things. First, they may replace important winter fluids such as the antifreeze and the windshield fluid. They will likely check out the condition of the battery to make sure that it has more than 50% power left; a weak battery may have difficulties starting during the coldest months of the year. The auto repair technician also needs to check the condition of your tires to make sure that you will have enough traction to keep you safe on winter roads. While they're at it, tire pressure will be fairly easy to check; make sure that you're not on the verge of a flat tire.

Be Sure to Keep the Gas Tank Full

Keeping your gas tank full throughout the winter is also a great idea for winter safety. With a low tank, you run a greater risk of having the lines freeze overnight. Your fuel performance may also vary in colder winter conditions, so having a tank that's running low is risky.

Have a Locksmith in Mind

While getting locked out of your car is never fun, it can be an even greater nuisance in freezing conditions. It may also be harmful to your car if the car is left in an area where you may get snowed in as you wait. Many people choose a lockout service like Locksmith Around Town ahead of time to make sure that they know who to call in the area in case of an emergency. Make sure that your lockout service is mobile and has a service range in the areas where you typically drive.

Look at Comprehensive Insurance Options

Several of the common winter car accidents may not be covered under your basic auto insurance plan. Auto glass replacement and repair is one coverage that's notoriously lacking. Dents from minor scuffles may be an added charge as well. Before winter comes, review your auto insurance coverage to make sure that it meets your winter coverage needs. If not, review your options with multiple insurance carriers for upgrading to a more comprehensive plan.

Finding Better Locks, Keys, and Safes

Few things are more intimidating than realizing that your belongings are susceptible to being robbed. I realized this truth when we left town for a few weeks and came home to find a completely ransacked home. To prevent future problems, we started combing the market for a great safe that would protect our belongings, and we were able to find one that we felt really good about. After it was installed, we stocked it with all of our most important possessions and worked on putting our best things in it from then on. It was a lot of work, but it really paid off. Check out this blog for more information.
