Upgrading To Automatic Locks In Your Vehicle

Blog

If your vehicle is only equipped with manual locks and you want the convenience of using an electronic opener to lock and unlock your vehicle, you can upgrade to electric locks. With the right tools and a little time, you can upgrade your locks or pay a locksmith to upgrade them for you.

Remove The Handles

Remove the door handles as well as the window cranks on the door where you want to install the automatic lock. You may need to purchase a special tool designed for your specific vehicle to remove the window crack; this mechanism goes around the handle and allows you to pull it off smoothly.

Remove The Door Panel

Next, you need to remove the door panel. There should be specific screws that you need to unscrew in order to remove the panel; they are most likely located on the side or bottom of the door panel. Remove them and place them somewhere safe. Once the screws are removed, you may need to use a screwdriver or crowbar to pry the door panel off.

Remove Any Additional Hardware

If there is additional handle or armrest hardware on the side of the door, remove it now so that you can get to the lock mechanism. There may be an inner water shield behind the main door panel, that is clear and plastic like that you need to peel away and set aside.

Install Universal Power Door Lock Kit

Now you need to install the universal power door lock kit that you used. Try to follow the directions inside of the kit as closely as possible.

First, you are going to need to see if there are holes for the actuator or if you need to drill holes for it inside of the door panel.

Second, you are going to need to take the lock rod in the kit and make sure that it runs parallel to the one in your door. You are going to need to line the rods up together and link them together using the linkage tools in the kit that you purchased. Make sure that the old and new rod move together and have clearance to operate.

Third, you will need to locate an area to set up the central locking module. This location should be near a constant-hot circuit in your door.

Forth, you are going to need to route the wires under the carpet and all the way up to the actuator and connect the wires together. Test out the system to make sure that it works and mount the keyless entry receiver module inside of your vehicle. All of these directions should be explained in more detail within the kit.

Reattach The Door Panel

Put the inner water shield back in place. Then, reattach any hardware that you had to remove in order to get to the water shield. Next, have someone hold the door panel in place while you reattach the screws that keep it secure and in place. Finally, reattach the door handle, window handle, and any armrests that you have removed from the door.

Finding Better Locks, Keys, and Safes

Few things are more intimidating than realizing that your belongings are susceptible to being robbed. I realized this truth when we left town for a few weeks and came home to find a completely ransacked home. To prevent future problems, we started combing the market for a great safe that would protect our belongings, and we were able to find one that we felt really good about. After it was installed, we stocked it with all of our most important possessions and worked on putting our best things in it from then on. It was a lot of work, but it really paid off. Check out this blog for more information.
