How To Prepare For Being Locked Out Of Your Home Or Car

Blog

Have you recently moved to a new area? Are you concerned about what might happen if you were to get locked out of your home or vehicle? Being locked out can be scary, especially if you are prone to bouts of forgetfulness. But being locked out doesn't have to result in a huge inconvenience to you. If you take a few simple precautions, getting locked out can be just a relatively minor situation that can be easily handled. Here are some things that you should do right now:

Get duplicate keys: You may already have considered getting extra keys but have been putting off doing so. Go to a locksmith and have him or her make extras of all of your keys. If part of the reason that you've been putting off getting duplicate keys is the high cost of car keys with electronic key fobs, procrastinate no longer. Because locksmiths usually have a much lower overhead than your local car dealership, they can duplicate most electronic keys for a lower price than your dealer would charge. They may also be open for hours when a car dealership would be closed, allowing you to get duplicate keys around your busy work schedule.

Set aside money: Locksmiths obviously aren't free and can, unfortunately, be a burden when your finances are already tight. Call a locksmith to get a quote for services that you think that you might need in the future. If you're always losing your car keys or think you may accidentally lock them in your vehicle, find out how much it would cost to have a locksmith get into your vehicle. Once you know how much this is, start setting aside a few dollars out of every paycheck. Consider skipping a few nights out or buying cheaper lunches for a while until you have enough money set aside. Then if you do need to use a locksmith, you won't have to choose between opening your apartment or paying all of your rent for the month.

Have bus or other transportation money: While a locksmith might want to be at your side immediately when you call them, that's obviously not possible. Depending on your location, it could take anywhere from minutes to hours for the locksmith to reach you. While waiting for the locksmith, it's important to get to somewhere safe. Always having a bus pass or extra cab fare on you will help ensure that you can get to a well-lit public location if you happen to be locked out in a bad neighborhood.

Finding Better Locks, Keys, and Safes

Few things are more intimidating than realizing that your belongings are susceptible to being robbed. I realized this truth when we left town for a few weeks and came home to find a completely ransacked home. To prevent future problems, we started combing the market for a great safe that would protect our belongings, and we were able to find one that we felt really good about. After it was installed, we stocked it with all of our most important possessions and worked on putting our best things in it from then on. It was a lot of work, but it really paid off.
