Common Signs Of Faulty Door Locks

Blog

If you've dealt with a faulty or broken lock, you understand how frustrating it can be. Despite how expensive or strong your door lock is, it may reach a point when it can no longer hold up. During this time, the lock becomes faulty, and you run the risk of getting locked out of your property.

It's always wise to inspect your locks if you feel they're deteriorating. This way, you can prevent further problems by calling a locksmith to repair your faulty lock. Failure to address door lock problems early will cause inconveniences when you least expect it.

Keep an eye out for the following signs so you know when to take action.

Locks Don't Turn Easily

A perfectly working door lock should turn with ease, but if you find you're struggling to unlock your door, there's a problem. You should never have to use a significant amount of force to turn a key in a lock.

A hard-turning lock indicates that a burglar messed with your door, or the lock is jammed with dirt. The other possibility is your lock has broken down or has some sort of impairment.

Flimsy Door Lock

Your door lock can be turning pretty well, but if you push or pull your locked door and it feels loose, then the lock isn't secured as it's supposed to. Leaving your door locks in this state makes your house vulnerable to break-ins. Even inexperienced thieves won't have trouble breaching through a flimsy door lock.

Although you might repair the lock by yourself, it's better to have a professional locksmith carry out the repairs.

Key Keeps Turning in the Lock

In some cases, you'll find a key keeps turning in the lock fairly easily. The problem isn't with the key but the door lock. So, before you tamper with the key, involve a locksmith as they might know where the problem lies.

If you find your key keeps turning in the lock, chances are you're dealing with a loose set screw in the doorknob. Other causes might include a broken cam or a tailpiece that's poorly connected.

Door Lock Latch problem

If your door lock latch fails to click into position or isn't properly aligned, you should know that you have a problem. Sometimes, the door might close from time to time, but that shouldn't trick you into ignoring the problem.

You can address the problem by adjusting the strike plate and tightening the screws on it, but if that fails, call a locksmith to adjust the latch.

Finding Better Locks, Keys, and Safes

Few things are more intimidating than realizing that your belongings are susceptible to being robbed. I realized this truth when we left town for a few weeks and came home to find a completely ransacked home. To prevent future problems, we started combing the market for a great safe that would protect our belongings, and we were able to find one that we felt really good about. After it was installed, we stocked it with all of our most important possessions and worked on putting our best things in it from then on. It was a lot of work, but it really paid off. Check out this blog for more information.
